NHL 20 is the next entry in its hockey video game series

EA Sports officially announced NHL 20, the next entry in its hockey video game series. The developer is promising some big changes for this year instalment across gameplay, presentation, modes, and more. It appears to be one of the biggest and most substantial changes to the NHL series in years. EA released a lot of details about NHL 20, and to help make sense of it all we have broken it down by section into the key categories of things you need to know. That includes its September release date on PS4 and Xbox One, new battle royale mode, cover star, and much more.

Auston Matthews journey to the cover of NHL 20 has been anything but conventional. Learn how the Arizona native forged his own unique path to NHL superstardom and became the first Toronto Maple Leafs player to grace the cover of EA Sports NHL. Auston Matthews consistently ignites the ice as one of the league’s top goal scorers. His lightning-quick toe-drag Signature Shot has put away teams across the NHL, making him a force to be reckoned with inside the rink. The American standout has made a name for himself in Canada and beyond, setting team records with the Toronto Maple Leafs and quickly solidifying himself as one of the purest goal scorers in the NHL. At just 21-years-old, Matthews nows exactly how to find the back of the net and he just keeps getting better.

Electronic Arts provided the first glimpse of NHL 20 during the 2019 NHL Awards. Signature Shots are the big new feature coming in NHL 20, replicating the animations and unique styles of hockey stars like Alex Ovechkin and Auston Matthews, the latter whom was also revealed as the cover athlete. Other new features include a new Eliminator competitive mode for Ones and Threes. Eliminator is inspired by the battle royale genre, pitting dozens of players in a massive bracket tournament. Ones has also opened up to support local multiplayer (in addition to Threes).

NHL 20 is also getting a much needed facelift with new play-by-play commentators, which has been one of the weakest factors in the NHL series for years. The entire NBC licensing has been dropped in favor of a broadcast package that is specifically tailored to NHL 20, which includes an improved score box UI. Moving to new gameplay features, EA Sports updated its Real Player Motion (RPM) technology with new Signature Shots. This brings the unique shots of NHL superstars into the game, including Matthews toe drag wrist shot and PK Subban heavy and powerful slapshot. Alexander Ovechkin smooth-as-butter one timer has also been brought into the game for NHL 20. Overall, EA Sports is promising hundreds of new shot animations.
