The Museum, created in 1967 and extended in various times, has recently been restructured in an evocative path around the harmonious Romanesque cloister, and hosts works from the whole diocese. Besides miniated choir elements, sacred silverware of the 14th to 19th centuries, medieval paintings and sculptures (with a vigorous relief of Giroldo da Como) worth of being mentioned is the Parato di S. Stefano (Saint Stephen drape - 1590 approx.) donated by Leone XI de’ Medici. A hall dedicated to the Sacra Cintola della Madonna (Sacred waist of Virgin Mary), the most precious relic of the territory, hosts the marble relief of a pulpit (1358-60) of the Siena school. The paintings include also some masterpieces of the Renaissance (Filippo Lippi, school of Botticelli), and remarkable altar pieces of the 16th and 17th centuries. Still, the most famous work is the outstanding marble parapet (1434-38) of the Cathedral’s External Pulpit, by Donatello and Michelozzo: a sort of round templet where the joy of the dancing angels bursts unrestrainable. |

Wooden sculpture of terse, refined modelling which has kept the original polychromy. A work which originated most likely in the Arezzo environment. The intense Christus triumphans is most likely a remainder of the momentous Romanesque Christ Crucified of the parish of Santo Stefano (the current cathedral), of a height of approximately 280 cm, which was destroyed in 1839. The sculpture, originally located on the iconostasis of the Romanesque church, was then moved to the counter-façade in 1575. |

triumphans, 2004 |
The head of the artist as a fulcrum of his work, since the creative moment originates there. This is the rule he adopted and that is repeated almost serially in all his works. The multiplied images in an halo effect, the trend to spread them in his projects (in this case, 8 times on thin metal bases) remove every reference to the tradition of portrait and self-portrait, since the head is seen as the bosom of the ideas, of the creation, of knowledge and of the work itself. Also of that great Christus triumphans nothing is left but the face, a fragment which holds the whole strength of the symbol because of the sense of majesty it irradiates. Di Vaia’s work weighs the symbolic and goes beyond it; it opens new dimensions, as Dalí did in Corpus Hypercubicus. Marco Bazzini |

The fresco was commissioned by jurist Giuliano Guizzelmi for his sepulchral
chapel, located in the “Vaults” underneath the Cathedral.
The painting, which is inspired to Domenico Ghirlandaio in the naive but
pleasant landscape, is a typical work by Tommaso, painter and town-hall
usher, who was active in Prato for a long time (Town hall, San Niccolò,
Figline, Grignano), and drew inspiration from the great Florence artists
of the late 15th century (Filippino Lippi, Botticelli, Ghirlandaio) often |

The points of view which open in his works are different, stratified like the different levels of a photomontage also when they appear in the third dimension. On the background of a mountain landscape -real even if of Renaissance features- a coloured boy exerts his ability and luck on a video poker. What should not be touched? The sense of the place or the evenness of a non-place such as a game room? The right of citizenship or the easy illusion of enriching without labour? And what is the role of the work of art (unlike the well-defined one of Magdalene) with its reaction to a fortuitousness which is more and more widespread and difficult to be managed? Marco Bazzini |
