Palazzo Pitti’s Costume Gallery Established in 1983 in the Palazzina della Meridiana annexed to Palazzo Pitti; started in 1776 upon the will of Grand Duke Peter Leopold of Lorraine, designed by architect Gaspare Maria Paoletti, it was completed by Pasquale Poccianti between 1822 and 1840 and was the historical residence of the Savoia in Florence. The show cases are fitted into the furnishing and decorations of the Lorraine and Savoia periods. With an asset of some 7,000 pieces, including historical clothes, fashionable accessories and stage costumes, Palazzo Pitti’s Costume Gallery is the first and foremost museum of history of fashion in Italy and is a reference point for other important collection centers of textile manufactured products, such as the Deposito degli arazzi (Tapestry deposit) of Florence superintendence. The exhibited clothes are replaced every two to three years, thus responding to requirements of preservation and valorization. Some venues in the gallery are allocated to temporary exhibitions which interact with the permanent set up. |

Sala centrale della Palazzina della Meridiana realizzata su progetto dell’architetto Pasquale Poccianti e decorata da fregio a bassorilievo in stucco di stile neoclassico, raffigurante scene dionisiache, realizzato ad opera degli scultori Luigi Pampaloni, Aristodemo Costoli, Emilio Santarelli ed Ulisse Cambi (1831 circa). Central hall of the Palazzina della Meridiana (Sundial Villa), carried out on the design by architect Pasquale Poccianti and bas-relief decorated with stuccos of the neo-classic style showing Dionysian scenes by sculptors Luigi Pampaloni, Aristodemo Costoli, Emilio Santarelli and Ulisse Cambi (approx. 1831). |

Appartenuto ad Eleonora da Toledo, moglie del Granduca Cosimo I de’ Medici, è l’abito con il quale era stata sepolta, esposto dopo il restauro. In raso di seta, è guarnito da ricamo in argento dorato su fondo in velluto ritagliato contornando il motivo a racemi e applicato al tessuto di fondo. Non era un indumento funebre, espressamente realizzato per venire indossato al momento della sepoltura, bensì un capo alla moda già usato in vita, analogamente a quelli indossati dal Granduca e dal figlio Don Garcia. The dress belonged to Eleonora da Toledo, wife of Grand Duke Cosimo I de’ Medici, and it was the very dress she was buried in, which is now exposed after restoration. In silk satin, it is trimmed by embroidery in gold-plated silver on a velvet background which has been cut by encircling the raceme contour and applied to the background fabric. It was not a funeral garment, expressly carried out to be worn at the moment of burial, but a fashionable cloth which was already used in life, as the ones worn by the Grand Duke and by their son Don Garcia. |

abito da sera è appartenuto a Margaret Brinton White, moglie di
Giovanni Savorgnan di Brazzà, fratello dell’esploratore Pietro.
In chiffon giallo/verde con cintura e alta balza in velluto nero. Ricami
ad applicazione di perline e cannucce in vetro bianche e nere formano
le bordure di scollo e maniche, mentre nella gonna analoghe bordure a
fascia delimitano motivi floreali stilizzati disposti longitudinalmente.
