Alex Zampini

Alex Zampini is an interdisciplinary artist working with music, filmmaking, photography and performance-art. Inspired by Bruno Munari's view "the more you know, the more relations between ideas you can develop...“, he supports his own eclecticism by the belief that each discipline influences and enriches another. The duality of image and sound became a topic of interest for him and he experimented with both, creating an approach that combined both visual and sound.
During his academic studies, he investigated the role of visual arts and focused on both teorethical and practical aspects of photography and videography. In 2010, after various solo and collective exhibitions in Italy and France, he moved with the purpose of making creativity his way of living. The concept of improvisation that characterized his previous works, found a proper ground for its flowering in Berlin where he became involved with contact improvisation and the contemporary dance and performance scene. He started to make music for various dance festivals in Germany and India, combining acoustic and electronic elements. A training with Katie Duck opened new perspectives to his performative approach and inspired Alex to further explore the relationship with dancer as both musican and videomaker. The main themes in his work are identity, mobility and permanence, community and boredom. A sense of the grotesque can be recognized in both his visual and musical work. Likewise, the use of ironic elements becomes an effective and direct tool to spread messages without the need for cryptic allegories.
Alex lives and works in Berlin, involved as musician and videomaker in severals dance and performance project spread around Europe. He recently produced his first dance documentary-movie and since 2014 he's active part of the belgian artistic collective Weave.
