Giulia Mattera

Giulia Mattera è un’artista performativa la cui ricerca esplora la performance art e il giardinaggio – entrambi considerati pratiche somatiche – come strumenti per collaborare con agenzie non umane e avviare rituali contemporanei per società interspecie collaborative e futuri speculativi. Considera il giardino come il suo studio d’artista e come un modello per forgiare futuri sostenibili in grado di affrontare la crisi ecologica. Mattera indaga il folklore e la magia nei giardini, speculando su come possano essere recuperati come apparati sociali nella società contemporanea. Giulia è un’artista attivista per il clima per Greenpeace Italia. Mattera è docente ospite presso la NABA Nuova Accademia delle Belle Arti di Milano (Italia) Giulia Mattera ha performato a livello internazionale presso Grace Exhibition Space (New York City), DfbrL8r Performance Art Gallery (Chicago, IL), Venice International Performance Art Week (Italia), Warsaw International Performance Art Weekend (Polonia), tra molte altre sedi. Ha conseguito un Master in Performance Making presso il Goldsmiths College (Londra, Regno Unito), mentre i suoi studi universitari presso la University of Warwick (Regno Unito) e l’Università di Pisa (Italia) si sono concentrati su arte e comunicazione. Mattera è stata destinataria di borse di studio e premi dall’Unione Europea, dal Ministero della Cultura italiano e dall’organizzazione artistica FUNBA in Guatemala.

Giulia Mattera is a performance artist whose research explores performance art and gardening- both considered as somatic practices- as tools to collaborate with nonhuman agencies, and initiate contemporary rituals for collaborative interspecies societies and speculative futures. She considers the garden as her artist’s studio, and as the model to forge sustainable futures that tackle the ecological crisis. Mattera researches folklore and magic in gardens, speculating on how they can be retrived as social apparatuses in our current society. Giulia is an artist climate activist for Greenpeace Italia. Mattera is a visiting lecturer at NABA Nuova Accademia delle Belle Arti Milano (Italy). Giulia Mattera has performed internationally at Grace Exhibition Space (NYC), DfbrL8r Performance Art Gallery (Chicago, IL), Venice International Performance Art Week (Italy), Warsaw International Performance Art Weekend (Poland), amongst other venues. She holds a Masters degree in Performance Making from Goldsmiths College (London, UK), whereas her undergraduate studies at University of Warwick (UK) and University of Pisa (Italy) focused on art and communication. Mattera has been the recipient of grants and awards from the European Union, the Italian Ministry of Culture and FUNBA art organisation in Guatemala.
